Nanotales Competition

Author Ziv Navoth woke up one morning, stared into a blank screen and wrote for 30 minutes. He repeated this for 146 consecutive days. The result is Nanotales. Shorter than a short story, a nanotale is the perfect antidote to modern-day life; designed to be read between tube stations, with a morning coffee, or at the bus-stop. With no chapters, no page numbers and no index, Nanotales can transport the reader into another world and back in seven minutes. Buy the book that inspired the competition by Clicking here

The world's greatest short story competition has just completed and, in my humble opinion, we may have some of the world's best stories!

How Will The Winners Be Chosen?
When we dreamed up this competition we wanted to democratize the process of discovering new literary talent. There are a number of pieces that needed to be in place for this to happen - the ability to develop a direct relationship with your readers, the ability to let the public decide whether you're good enough to be published (versus some book editor who's long lost touch with what the public wants) the ability to get non-standard forms of literature published (when was the last time you saw a book of short stories featured in your bookstore?) and more.

We knew that if we would get more than 200 entries it would be impossible to ask the public to vote them, so we created a panel of esteemed judges to sift through the first batch of 2200 or so stories and narrow them down to just under 100. We're now giving the public the ability to voice their opinion.

So has this turned into a popularity contest? Yes and no. The intention is that popular stories as voted by the people will rank higher than unpopular stories. At the same time, we're aware that people with hundreds of friends on Bebo have a better chance of getting more votes than people who don't (like the folks who entered through the Guardian).

That's why the final say will be the publishers. It's their neck that's on the line and it's their investment that will go down the drain if the book doesn't sell.

In summary, winners will be chosen by looking at the number of reviews they received since the finalists were announced, times the number of stars for each review, plus factoring in the fact that Guardian selections only came in on Monday. The publisher will then review ALL the stories to make sure that no amazing stories (with no friends...) go unnoticed. Then, on May 1, we'll announce the winners.

Does this make Nanotales a perfect competition? Not at all. Then again, how many competitions do you know of that enable a 17 year old (or a 70 year old) to get discovered, win a competition and get a book deal within three weeks?

What's Nanotales?
1. It's a book of short stories written by Ziv Navoth. You can find it here:
http://tinyurl.com/yv6flu

2. It's a competition in search of the world's best storytellers. Entries are no longer accepted, but you can vote for the finalists and see who the winners are on May 1 (the prize is getting your story published in a book!)
